BCOC 3rd Annual Democracy in America lecture

Saturday's lecture in Shady Canyon, Irvine by Professor Aaron Belkin '88 "HowWe Won: Progressive Lessons from the Repeal of don't ask, don't tell" was a hit with the appreciative audience of thirty alumni and friends of Brown.

The event was Brown Club's 3rd annual lecture on changes in American Democracy as we continue to feature compelling speakers, beautiful venues and interesting topics each fall. We plan to offer more such events next spring and fall so be sure to check our site often.

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is finally history. You already knew that.

But did you know Brown alumnus, Aaron Belkin ’88, played an instrumental role in overturning this policy?

Harvard Law Professor Janet Halley says of Belkin "Probably no single person deserves more credit” for its repeal.

Brown Club OC in cooperation with TBGALA and the Asian American Alumni Association is honored to present its 3rd annual Democracy in America lecture series as it welcomes Professor Aaron Belkin of San Francisco State University discussing:

How We Won: Progressive Lessons from the Repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

Don’t miss this fascinating discussion of how the unconventional tactics of Belkin’s Michael Palm Center helped to reverse discrimination in the military - and how these tactics challenge conventional progressive wisdom about how to effect social change.

The event will be held at 75 Shady Canyon Drive, Irvine 92693 and complimentary refreshments will be served. The location is in the beautiful, gated community of Shady Canyon and advance registration is required for admittance.

Admission is:

-free for Students and Brown Young Alumni (Class of ’11 or later).

-Registered Brown Club OC members are $5

-Adult General Admission is $10.

Date: Saturday, November 2

Time: Event starts at 4:30. Lecture followed by Q&A from 5:00-6:00.

Brown President Chris Paxson in Los Angeles Sept. 25

Bill, Judy, Marcia and Scott attended on behalf of your club, and Scott got to make a few remarks
thanking President Paxson and introducing our club to the 300+, largely LA-based audience. We also got to meet some of our friends from Brown Alumni Affairs such as Ginny McQueen and Lisa Miranda.

Details to be announced, but Brown's new President, Christina Paxson, plans to visit Los Angeles and meet alumni, parents, and friends on Weds., Sept. 25, 2013. If you can make the trip up there, or happen to working in that neighborhood that day, I really recommend you try to meet Chris. She is the 7th of Brown's 19 presidents I'll shake hands with, and a couple I knew pretty well. They were almost all pretty impressive people.

(I'm not that old - the overlap with one president was one year, and some were pretty short-lived.)

You will be asked for money regardless of whether you meet Pres. Paxson, so you might as well meet her. Stay tuned for more info, and help us explain to the Easterners that the OC is not L.A. or San Diego.

Brown Football on TV Sept. 28! Join us in Mission Viejo

NBC Sports Network will televise the Brown - Harvard game live from Soldier Field, Boston, at 4:30 PM Pacific on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013 - and Brown Club OC will gather to cheer on the Bears at Oggi's Pizza and Brewing, Mission Viejo. Here's the info on our venue

http://missionviejo.oggis.com/

No admission/cover, family-friendly - we'll either be in the brewery room behind the bar, or on the patio outside - let me know your preference. Lots of flat-panel TV's. This is the same place we used for a game last year, so you already know where it is.

Brown is picked 3rd in the Ivy league this year behind Penn and Harvard. Can we score an early season upset? Join us at 4:30 PM on Sept. 28 and find out.

The weather, venue, food and especially the presentation were perfect, and the Club hosted dinner for Barbara and husband Cliff at the St. Regis resort later that evening.

Member Event: Judy Kaufman: The New Curriculum

On Friday, April 5, in Irvine, CA, Judy Kaufman presented "Ira Magaziner, the Genesis of the New Curriculum & Other Tales from the Class of '69". Judy shared behind-the-scenes stories about the events that shaped the unique Brown academic environment of today - and how it might easily not have happened.
